Bilsdale Midcable, now Chop Gate

The last cemetery on our epic morning around Hawnby was the, now redundant, St Hilda’s Churchyard.  It isn’t possible to get into the church now, the door/porchway being sealed off with plastic mesh almost like a building site, but the churchyard is accessible, and there are memorials there for Corporal H Ainsley and J G Kitching as well as a 6 foot stone cross bearing the inscription:

IN SACRED MEMORY OF

Harry Ainsley, Percy William Allenby, Robert Etherington, John William Garbutt, Harry Knaggs, William Tasker, Henry Trousdale, Clarence Elwyn Wilson and of Charles William Reginald Duncombe, Earl of Feversham

WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918
