Spanbroekemolen and the pool of peace

The Spanbroekmolen crater is the result of the underground explosion of an ammunition depot.  Together with the explosion of  18 other deep mines on June 7 1917, this formed the signal for the allied attack on the German positions and the liberation of the Wijtsjate  and Mesen.  The tunnel to the ammunition depot  was 521.5 metres long, and the depot itself was  located 27 metres underground.
