Looking up at those looking down from the Menin Gate

We were amazingly lucky last week to spend the best part of the week looking at the war underground along with a small group from Battle Honours. This was our first trip with Clive, and it certainly won’t be our last.  The itinery was amazing, and the level of knowledge demonstrated by both Clive and Mike was stunning.  There’ll, no doubt, be several posts detailing some of the highlights, but I thought the company deserved an honourable mention here first.

Our first crater – many more to follow

Our first bunker…………

14th Light Division Memorial

We were picked up at Dover, as arranged, spot on time, then travelled with Clive and Mike in the Tourneo for our first stop to set the scene for the week, then on to  Ypres, where we were able to attend the Last Post ceremony again.  It’s always an emotional place, but this time, Mike was taken up into the roof, so he could capture the occasion with his camera, with Clive acting as photographer’s assistant. We could barely see them, and the scaffolding was definitley rocking a good deal, but apparently Mike got what he needed.
